There are a few ideas floating around in my head. Plus I have to get my ass in gear for a show I'm part of. It opens the beginning of March. But you know, if it weren't for the last minute, nothing would get done.
So.
Let me share these images of the first hat I started Sunday. So far it's been 4.5 hours into making this guy. It is still in progress.

This is a sketch of the idea I went with at the get go.

The Whatnots and Treasures collection really fueled this hat and the direction I'm going with the future hats.

More is more.

You'll notice this hat had gold netting originally planned (in the sketch above). It was working alright. But as makers of things will understand, even if it 'works' it doesn't mean it 'feels' right.

So I swapped it out with some dainty eyelet trim.

This shirt wasn't doing much for me except making me look frump-ified. But I loved the color and gauzy fabric. So it's new job in this house is to add to the textural and color layering.

This hat has the potential (and let me state for the record: potential I am really interested in perusing...) ....but it has the potential to be 3 hats in one. Plus it might include a detachable brooch that you could wear on clothing separately. Currently I'm plotting how this can happen. So this is why you see it not yet finished. Pins are dangerous things for a head to encounter:

The feather was part of a generous donation from Poochie's feathered babies(You may know Poochie from Show Daydreams). It's been over a year since I received those beautiful feathers. I felt afraid to use them because they are quite magnificent.

I had ideas about dying, using them individually or together as a major statement headpiece and also cutting/shaping them. I never felt brave enough to commit to an idea. The bravest I got was snipping hearts out of this single feather. But because I hadn't yet found it's purpose, it remained jaunitly perched in a lamp in the studio. Until now!

There are a couple ways to wear the turkey feather. as a graceful arc or as a perky swoosh. What do you like better?

The brooch is the "Carnival of Love" Brooch in the Whatnots and Treasures collection. I may use it in the hat, possibly create a similar feeling with a different brooch, or add more whatnots directly to the hat (in addition to a brooch). I mean, after all, the general vibe of these is More is More. Subtlety is not an option.

And finally, the in progress hat on a real fleshy person vs. styrofoam. I'll keep you updated on the progress of these hats for the show.

Updates: Snowpeople in love, Emergency Kits, Simon Kitty and Brooches

I've been out of teaching mode for the past week and a half. It has gone SO quickly! I've been busy with Pretty Good Things things. Like making these one of a kind brooches in the "Whatnots and Treasures" collection:

My beautiful Simon's been keeping good company the past few weeks (natch.):

I spent some time making this ornament for my friend Jenny and her man Colin for an engagement party they're having over the holiday times. I really want to keep it for myself - I mean there's too much glitter in it for me not to love it. Plus the snow-folks have mini hats (also glittered). GAH! the tiny-ness and glitter is out of control. But have decided I must wrap it up and send it off to its new home. 'Cuz I love Jenny and I whole-hardheartedly approve of her lifetime partner choice!

My hands were also busy making this emergency kit, which, I too want to keep. But its destined for my sister. She's pretty prepared, like all the time. She's a total life planner. Even if she already has this stuff in her purse, I don't think she has a shiny gold roll-up number made by her sis. But just in case she does, I bought her some wine and cheese too. So she can kick off her shoes after a long day of being an awesome woman and relax with her awesome husband and sip some awesome Merlot and eat some awesome cheese (Manchego, anyone?).

I'm currently working on some new do-dads (all one of a kind, by the way) for the next shop update. It's like Templeton's private reserve up in here! (*adjust inner 8 year old nerd glasses*)

I like to start off with a clean desk but it always ends up looking like a tornado hit my supplies.

I am beginning to think for as much as I enjoy order, neatness and organization, my true state of being is cluttered, disorganized and messy. I am constantly at odds with myself.

Well. We're not going to figure this one out during this session, folks.

So. Instead I'll bring your attention back to the new collection which contains - get ready for it : Broohes! Predicted site update: Dec. 16.

Me and PGT

The semester is winding down.

As winding to an end: Tomorrow is the last day of classes. Just some grading to do after that!

And then. 4 weeks. of me and PGT time: QT with MP and PGT. I cannot wait. I am looking forward to finding answers, growing stronger, focusing. Getting right.

I spent a little time drawing and painting today. Experimenting. I used watercolor, graphite, gold leaf and gouache.

Any artists out there ever have one of those, "well shit, I should have stopped earlier. I'm just going to have to plow ahead and see if I can pull this one out of the can" moments? I had that when I started adding the gold leaf. And though gold leaf is inherently lovely, there was some watercolor magic under there that kinda regret covering up. OH well.

As much as I wish I hadn't done that one thing in the illustration, I always remind my students (and myself!) is that even if you "mess it up" or erase something you did it once therefore you can do it again. Let go. Give up control. And maybe it will be better.

My sister told me my niece always begs to buy fake nails for her little soon to be 8 year old nails. Mom always says no. But I think Santa told me he's bringing some for play time.

But it got me thinking about Lee Press-on Nails from back in the day.

Remember those? I bought some...not Lee, but a $6 set at Target. This is why I don't have a meaty retirement fund. $6 dumb fake nails for fun.

Anyway.

Last night, after a ~~bottle~~ sip of wine I slapped on the set. Lookin' pretty ~~cheap~~ good, huh?

Well at a distance they don't look so bad. really.

Oh yeah, Simon told me I should show you guys his nails. Because they are 'fiercer'. so he says. what do you think?

I don't know how you ladies do it with long nails! Everything takes me about 10 times longer to do.

But no doubt I feel a little fancy. And a little like a lady. A fancy lady wearing press-ons.

Simon benefits from the nails, at least:

Alright. I can do administrative work with these nails, but come time to get to making, they have got to go.

An experiment with gold leaf turned out pretty. And folks there's no denying feeling pretty special working with fluttery, light-as-air magic shine. Even if it isn't real gold or anything. But, damn. That sheeot is hard to photograph and scan. There's something better about in-person is all.

Hey everybody. Here's a picture of me (and Simon) on my b-day (Oct. 8).

Normally I do a big birthday PGT sale on my b-day...but clearly, you can see I've not been tending garden here or there at the PGT plot. I can't say for certain when, but I'd like to make it up to everyone. (and by make it up I mean a sale and def. shop updates...as promised long, long ago in a Sept. newsletter) But I do know today isn't that day.

Go back two posts and you'll see I've been in a period of stasis. But I'm feeling a change in my bones. This weekend's goal: figure out life. The whole thing. Except for how I'm going to pay for retirement....that's next weekend.

'Eh, how's that going, Mary?', you ask.

Well, it's slow going. But not hopeless. Well, shoot....it must mean I am 31 after all!

Hi friends. Let me be forthright here and start this post saying I don't handle life well all the time. Or let me rephrase that and say: occasionally I don't like how I handle my life.

I'm a good sprinter, but I lack endurance.

The easy way for me to cope after a period of sprinting is to feel is sorry for myself. Which is how I am feeling now. Feeling sorry for myself happens when I feel out of control. Like life is happening to me. This happens when I'm doing something wrong.

But it's hard to take a step back and breathe and be calm, rational and just be. Clarity comes in just being. Not worrying. Right?

Feeling sorry for myself is a pretty dumb situation to get stuck in because it makes for periods of doing nothing or avoiding resulting cyclical not so good feelings. And if you're not doing you're not advancing/changing/learning. But I also am also very capable of feeling the high highs - - feeling incredibly hopeful and excited with an: "Imma gonna make it"/"I can do this! - ain't no thang" feeling.

Ugh. This shit gets old. And this type of working (sprinting not endurance running) is a waste of time.

Anyway. I just wanted to post a 'hey! I'm here. But life and work is happening to me in ways that aren't ideal - but no worries - because they are definitely manageable - and I just need some time to work it out.'

I'm sure you've had these periods too.

So I have to say to myself:

"Relax, Ms. Mary. And quit sprinting."

"Ok, self."

"Oh, and Ms. Mary, you need to draw more. It makes you happy."

"You're right, self."

So in the mean time between here and the next blog post - whenever that might be, enjoy the above photo of an illustration I recently drew/painted that helped me remember a thing or two about doing what we love, taking a break, and reminding myself that I don't have it all figured out but one of these days I might.

Renegade Craft Fair - Chicago 2011!

It was almost two weeks ago Nick and I set out to have another Renegade Craft Fair adventure. This time our destination: Chicago!

Our drive from Nebraska to Illinois takes us through Iowa where I look forward to seeing the field of windmills - - this photo is just the beginning of a bunch (like, we're talking at least 50) near the interstate in IA.

Things were different this year in a few ways. For one we managed a flat tire on the way - adding 3 hours to our normal 8 hour drive. yuck. but we did see two rainbows waiting to be rescued. PLUS it was my first flat tire. And I've always been afraid of them, but now I know that I can get through it a-ok.

Can you see the rainbow? Trust me, it's there.

And we did help this spider eat not once, but twice! as our presence on the side of the road interrupted grasshoppers into it's dinner web. Good job spider! Sorry, grasshopper dudes.

So on to Chicago. We stayed at the Wicker Park Inn again this year - I love it there! Highly recommended if you're visiting Chicago. We stayed in the Chicago room this trip. Very nice. That particular room has a balcony that overlooks the train. It is super close to Division street (Where the fair is held), within walking distance to bars/foods and the B&B set up makes you feel comfy and cared for. Plus as an added bonus I like to pretend I live in a part of that city I could never afford!

The fair was sunny and clear - this was a plus for set up (remembering last year, it was rainy during set up that created unwelcome stress and caused some rude words exchanged between me and my man!) But this year set up went soooo well! No fights and time to spare. (yessss! *insert mental image of me doing that late 80s early 90s bent knee/fist pull at waist move*)

Plus this year I started to us magic in my hat making...so you know, that probably didn't hurt things.

My old friend Logan (like, from back in our Middle School Days!....be sure to check out her book review blog, btw.) was a delightful booth helper on Sunday. I can't thank her enough! I'm not sure she knew what she was getting herself into this year - it was So freaking hot in that tent....but she was friendly to booth visitors and helped with the moral support I require from booth helpers as I tend to get emotional at these things. I can help it, I'm a delicate flower.

You know, probably the best part of the whole fair experience was the support and encouragement I received from returning customers and new ones too! I just wanted to scoop everyone up and give them a big stinky hug (stinky because, after 10 hours in that tent, I have to have smelled, at least, just a little).

You know how I mentioned that I am a delicate flower at these things? Well...I truly appreciate every one who came into the tent and shared their story about owning a PGT treasure or enjoying what they saw in the booth. It lifted me up. And I needed that. Thank you (and you all know who know who you are) from the bottom of my heart.

One story that especially lifted me is about young teenage girl (and her supportive mom) who returned this year to say hi and shop. Last year she purchased a Tiny Sailor Fascinator. (She even rocked it to the fair this year!) There was some hesitation to purchase it last year, I remembered - would she wear it, etc.? Who doesn't remember braving adolescence only to be reminded that some of your peers aren't exactly accepting of things that stand out and are rad...even if you like or don't like said peers. That middle school shit is tough. amIrightoramIright? But this sassy young lady decided to purchase the fascinator and brave the judgement of her peers - who - as you may guess - made fun of it! :( boo! (smell ya later, haters) but teachers loved it (yay!) In the end she stuck it out (I think moved to a new school) and found acceptance of her awesomeness in some new friends/peers, who by the way, love her newest addition to her collection: the Tiny Dancer Fascinator! You're an inspiration - way to stay true to your style, S.G.! Worrying what others will think is time wasted, kwim?

Other pluses of this trip included seeing our two friends Jake and Alisa who, this year, are now residents of Chicago! They totally rocked the tear-down with Nick and I and made it so we were out of there in less than an hour! Plus we just love these two and it was great to be able to hang, even if it was just for a little bit.

I really could have done with a buffer day on either side of our Chicago visit - but this gal right here and my man have other jobby-jobs to do and it just had to be a whirlwind trip. Sigh. Maybe someday.

Here we are on Sunday night...remarkably I wasn't like 10000% exhausted (really just, like, 100% exhausted) and was able to grab a couple beers and eat nachos with my man, Alisa and Jake. It was a great end to the whole sha-bang!

OMG Hat: Chihuahua Pup Sunbathing.

Admittedly, this OMG Hat post isn't totally, completely about the hat. I mean, the sweet white baby's sun hat alone isn't that unique.

However, I don't think I need to twist your arm to agree that this warrants entry into the OMG hat hall of fame because OMG. It's a dog in a mother effing hat looking pretty darn boss. AND she's(?) named Pinky.

Lucy's from Lucy Snowe Photography precisely captures the attitude, colors, soft focus of mid century....swap out the pooch for a human and it's like a photo shoot from a 50s Harper's Bazaar.

Behind the PGT scenes in 40 seconds

Are you ever curious about how long it takes me to make certain PGT goods? or what my workspace might look like deep into the making process? or what kind of face I make when I burn my fingers using a glue gun? (look out second 26 for that drama)

Well, wonder no more, my friends!

Watch this 40 second video chronicling making 9 Golden Bouquet Headbands!

In real time it took me about four hours to complete the nine...from start to finish. That includes: covering the metal headbands with gold tubing and finishing the ends, creating the felt backing where the flowers adhere to, selecting and cutting the fabric leaves, selecting the flowers for layout, adding faux stamens in certain flowers for added pizazz, gluing the flowers in their arrangement, staying hydrated and dancing to music during the making process.

It's fun (even with the burning of the flesh - ouch!)....it's a labor of love!

PGT Posse Inductee No. 6: Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox! What do I say about inducting Annie Lennox into the posse...? First off, are we, the current members of the PGT Posse, even worthy?

When I think of Annie Lennox, of course I think of her rad jams from the Eurythmics era and her solo career. I think of her infinitely cool Scottish accent and awesome theatrics in her music videos. I think about her crazzeee faces she makes in her videos (I love these faces!) Own it sister.

She is an advocate/activist for her SING campaign (HIV/AIDS, women, children)

But the thing that really seals the deal (for me, at least) is she has an aura about her that is genuine, honest, confident, beautiful, glowing - it is contagious. In any of her interviews I've seen on the boob-tube or internets-tubes I just can't help but smile as she is talking. She has a sparkle that translates. Youknowwhatimtalkin'bout.

The woman is strong and vibrant and the perfect addition to the Pretty Good Things Posse.

Style it: What to wear, the first edition.

I've toyed with the idea of trolling the Internets for you, my lovely readers, with the goal of creating outfit pairings with Pretty Good Things' hats etc....but there a few things that stop me.

Number one: that shit will take FOREVER. OMG. finding the garments. shoes. blah blah blah. hop. hop. hop all over the internet. linking to the garment. making a polyvore or something for everyone. I don't have that time. It takes me long enough to post the entries that I do on this blog because I am a slow-poke. I'm going to opt for the selfish route on this one.

Number two reason I haven't done it (and the most important reason): You guys have the garments hanging in your closet already!

Let me explain: You already know what outfits you own that make you glow and feel snazzy. Pair the PGT hat with the outfits that make you happy! Radiating happiness makes you beautiful and happiness is a requirement when wearing a PGT hat.

Basically, you don't need me or anyone else telling you what to wear a hat with...or how to wear things if you aren't a size 0 or how you have to cover up "problem areas" (don'tevengetmestartedonthatbullsh*t) or how to covet everysinglething we see on last season's runways...how to consume, consume, consume!

But I am still drawn (no pun intended) to create "Style it" illustrations of PGT stuff. It's not that I want to tell you what to wear. Nope.

The "style it" post illustrations might give you color combo ideas, or silhouettes, etc. although that's still not the end point. (Remember: we already discussed that you own the "what to wear it with")

The point is to convey the Pretty Good Things' attitude through these 2-D ladies, for me to practice my illustration skillz, and gosh darn it, I just like to draw. So that's that.

Come to think of it, I think this list is actually a mandatory list. For all people to wear. All the time. (especially the sequins part).

As for reasons to wear a hat, ah my darling, there are plenty of reasons and occasions. Of course, weddings, parties and special events are the perfect time to wear a hat, fascinator or other decorative element on top of your head but honestly, I think the first and most important reason you should wear a hat is because you darn well want to wear it no matter the occasion, thankyouverymuch.

Renegade Austin 2011 Roundup: Katastophic Design

I met Melissa (the owner/designer of Katastrophic Design at last year's Renegade Craft Fair in Austin when she was an attendee - and yippie for everyone this year....she was a vendor! There's something about her color story and fabrications that make me all nostalgic for my teensy years.

Something noteworthy about her line...she hand dyes all the fabric and constructs them herself! Lovely. Imma gonna keep watching her shop for more awesomeness.

And P.S. that hoodie up there has thumb holes! holy cow!

Hat Style: Kate Middleton

Hey you guys! I didn't know if you were aware, but there's a new thing called a "fascinator" in the fashion world. I think Kate Middleton invented them. Right?

jk, you guys!

I hafta say Kate Middleton is a beautiful young ambassador for head-wear! Can you argue with the fact that the world (especially, it would seem the US) is totally in love with her/the prince?

Isn't this a cutie-pie picture of the two of them? MATCHING Cowboy hats?! Sign. Me. Up.

She's got a clean, crisp sense of style. (and don't take this as rude when I say the next thing because I do like her style...but it's the kind of look that is easy to digest, you know? Safe.) Perfect for a future queen. Keep everyone happy. Not too crazy, not too stuffy a little bit of glamor and very chic....and of course no royal would be complete with LOTS of head wear (though I am sure many a folk don't like her toppers, especially dudes, but we've been over that, haventwenow?)

So to all those hat haters...we'll flip them the bird - British style on one hand and American on the other! Eat it, scaredy cat.

But back to those hats and fascinators.

I met Betsy from Betsy and Iya at the Renegade Craft Fair - Austin '11.

(side note: I always feel like adding that cheesy "baaybee" on whenever I say the string of "Renegade craft fair...." but NEWWAAAY.)

Back to the lovely Besty!

She had the booth right next door to Pretty Good Things. Sometimes it feels like jewlery at craft fairs can be a dime a dozen, but these required a closer look! Her pieces are a mash up of bold, delicate, understated and unique. I love all the tiny details such as changing up the chains or adding tiny brass or other metal tags or beads between chains or connectors.

Pink. Flocked. I love them. I don't even have to know the sincere tribute the collection was designed around. Although the designer's concept is interesting I see them alone and I think they are interesting enough. I am a thumbs up giver to "stand-alone-ability".

Lucille Ball was an easy choice to add to the growing (slowly but surely) PGT Posse. She was a go-getter, powerhouse of a woman. I don't know about you, but I have instant admiration for a woman who was the first female head of a production company. PLUS don't you just want to be her BFF after watching a few of her ridiculous adventures and schemes in I Love Lucy?

Anyway, I am officially inducting Lucille B. into the posse because to me she's a lady that knows how to laugh at herself, exudes confidence, charm and just plain cool. And those are qualities that are pretty fierce (and required of any posse member!)

Make It: Achievement award broach/badge

The idea behind this badge was inspired by two things:

Boutonnieres I am working on for a friend's wedding (more on this later, laters because I am not quite finished)
Judy Moody's summer plan from Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer . (I saw the movie with my 7 year old niece this weekend to clarify why Judy Moody is the source of such inspiration.) Basically, all you need to know is Judy Moody has a summer plan to earn "thrill points" during her Not Bummer Summer.

I was thinking I wanted to send Elise something sparkly and fun to encourage her to have a Not Bummer Summer, too. It's not just a plain old badge with her initial on it - it's a badge to record all the fun stuff she does! I plan to buy self sticking rhinestones she can then add to the tails when she completes her fun activity.

Another spin on it would be to give it to your friend with the gems already attached. You could include a list that then tells them what each means. (for example: yellow rhinestone: Remember that time you bought me saltines and pepto tablets that one time I got really drunk the night before because you kept buying me drinks and I didn't say no...pink rhinestone: for encouraging me to do that one thing even though no one else thought it was a good idea. And it turned out to be the best etc.)

Anyway....

Supplies:

Cheese P-corn
Glue gun
Pinking sheers
Scissors
gold embossed fabric (or other fabric of your choice)
ribbon (1 5/8" wide)
ribbon ( 1/4" wide)
sequin ribbon (enough for a letter of your choice.)
1.5" pin
"The Neutron Dance" by the pointer sisters
not pictured: felt and magic.

Step 1 - cut:
Cut each ribbon to desired length (mine was about 3" each). Cut a triangle out of the tails. Cut out 2.25" diameter circle out of the gold embossed fabric using pinking sheers. Cut a slightly smaller circle out of the felt also with pinking sheers.

Note: The felt backing will earn you points for neatness and you won't get sent to hell when Martha checks off your name at the pearly gate.

Step 2 - glue:
Position ribbon as pictured above and hot glue the smaller ribbons to the back of the main large ribbon. Turn over and glue the gold badge to the front. Finally, glue the felt backing to the back.

Step 3:
Break for cheese p-corn and neutron dancing.

Step 4:
Go back and re-do step 3 because I know you didn't do it. I'm serious. If you don't follow the instructions Just. So. - - your craft will pay!

Step 5:
Lay out the initial to estimate the length you'll need of sequin ribbon. Cut and use a dab of hot glue on each end to stop it from unfurling. No pictures for this step - but there are two methods. Either draw out your letter on the gold or just eyeball it when you lay a line of hot glue. I prefer the latter.

Step 6:
Turn the badge over. squeeze a line of hot glue along the back of the pin. Position it on the back of the badge and press down. Make sure there's enough glue to squish through the holes (but not too much).

Let it cool/dry and TA DA!....

I even heard an unprompted "this is really neat" when she was working on documenting all her "exciting adventures" thus far into the summer.

This morning at the park she said, "We are going to do fun things and find interesting things with my telescope and we can add it to the badge" Make it so, sista! I love you, Leesy.

Unleash the Unicorns!

Remember how I said "more on that later" referring to how Nick and I scampered off like unicorns to Castle Unicorn (near Glenwood, IA and 15 mins from Council Bluffs/Omaha)?

Remember?

Well that's what we did! Last week.

A few of our lovely friends gave us a night at the castle as our wedding gift and we finally used it! So another Thank You! is in order.

I believe, if anything, this one won out mostly due to its name....I mean how can you resist?

John, one of the owners, greeted us right as we pulled up and made us feel right at home. He gave us a little tour and then let us settle in. In the morning he made us a delicious and huge breakfast. John really was very welcoming and friendly.

We learned that it was built in the 80s by some bachelor dude. And it was named Castle Unicorn because of it's single spire. (But I think they should actually say it is because there are unicorns in the forest.)

We also found it hard to resist talking in that overly dramatic tone and inflection while at the castle - "Unleash the unicorns!", "Breakfast is served!", "Excuse me while I use the royal throne!".

So. let me say something about the Kings Quarters: the room and bathroom combined was probably the total size of our entire apartment. Maybe it was the super tall ceilings. But whatever it was....it was BIG.

Giddy with the fact that we were on a mini vacation and the size of the room - it caused me to scamper/skip/interpretive dance (more than once) across the length of the room.

Now, nick and I are similar to Axe Cop and can identify with his vacation style. I mean, it's not like I want to do that every day on a true weeks vacation...but we're talking one night and I ain't about to exert myself beyond reclining in a KING SIZE BED, y'all!

Man. If I had to choose between a king size bed and groceries for two months, I would be hard pressed to justify opting for groceries. I have to start saving. Anyway.

We nibbled on cheese, crackers, summer sausage and mini Oreos and washed it down with rum and diet cokes. Sat back on the bed and watched almost the entirety (started at 78?) of VH1's 100 greatest hard rock songs. And as an added bonus, if this evening of rest and relaxation couldn't get better, -Spoiler alert!- the number one song was:

Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N Roses. AYYEEEE! I loourve that song. Like Celine Dion LOURVE it. AND if you would believe it: Totally Called It. (or wished it, perhaps)

I was surprised that the castle was actually located on top of a Loess Hills. Like, you have to drive up this winding path that, for someone (me) who doesn't like driving on mountain roads, was kind of freaky. 'Cuz you know if you drove off it you wouldn't be in great shape. But I am a baby about stuff like that and It wasn't really a mountain road and I also should say that I get nervous walking down sloped things. Yes, I just admitted that.

Anyway. I really did expect it to be at the foot of the hill... but the view was lovely and worth the drive:

After breakfast we went for a little walk in the woods/fields. We spotted so many tiny little things.

Make it: DIY no-sew 5 minute headband holder

In this project I'll demonstrate the fastest, easiest, coolest, most awesomest way to making a headband holder...pretty enough to display on your vanity and simple enough to slap out in 5 minutes. Cuz it's all NO-SEW y'all! This mother trucker doesn't even need glue!

I love fast little crafty projects like this because they placate the immediate need to: Make. Something. With a capital M and S! You artsy, crafty people can relate to this addiction, I am sure.

PLUS It's always nice to see what you've got in terms of accessories - you'll wear them more!

AndOneMoreThing.... not that I have to bring it up to all you crafty mamas and dads and legal guardians out there....these quick, easy, hands on no-sew projects these keep the attention of the smallish kiddos.

There is a pieced headband holder cover that requires a sewing machine (I use one at craft fairs) see it in the foreground here:

BUT I figured there are more of you who don't own a sewing machine and those who do can figure that easy peasy pattern out on your own. So without further ado...here's how you do it in 5 easy steps.

What you'll need:

2 rubber bands
1 piece of fabric measuring 21" x 23"
(I used a piece of woven cotton scrap, but use what you have. How about reusing an old pillowcase or re-purposing a skirt?)
Scissors
1 paper towel roll (the wider the diameter the better)
(You can display the end product horizontally, but these also work really nicely propped up vertically so make sure the paper towel is wide enough to put enough tension on the headbands so they don't slide down. I think the one in the photo is Bounty)

Step 1:
Cut the fabric to 21" x 23"
(you could get away with a true square at 21" x 21", and you could even go somewhat smaller, I'll admit. But I like this size as it gives you enough to overlap and leaves enough for the "tails".)

Step 2:
Roll it up and rubber band each edge. It should look like a giant smarties roll. Give the bands some leeway - just wrap the rubber band around a couple times.

Step 3:
This is the reason you need that leeway. Next, shove the tails into the roll. The rubber band will stay on and the tails should tuck in neatly.

Step 4:
Finally, pour yourself a drink and kick back and admire your new display of all your fancy treasures from PrettyGoodThings.com!

Pro-Tips:

Maximize your vertical storage: sick a straight pin or two in the top and hang elastic headbands from the pin.
Use the selvage of the fabric to "finish" the edge that will show once the cylinder is wrapped.
if working as a kids craft project - encourage them to paint a cool picture or potato stamp the fabric before wrapping!

Renegade Austin 2011 Roundup: Infrared Studio

I met briefly met Lauren, the designer/owner of Infrared Studio at the Renegade Craft Fair in Austin. Her booth caught my eye during one of my breaks wandering the aisles and navigating the crowds. And as per usual with the handmade sellers at the fair - she was a sweet gal to chat with.

She designs beautiful laser-cut jewelry and other edgy jewelry. I didn't even think I was a skulls kind of gal, but these are lovely, don't you agree?

She also had gorgeous vintage re-fashioned rhinestone bracelets that I was hoping would be in her shop...but trust me when my inner magpie says they were awesomely blinggy (do we use this term any longer?) and beautiful.

My friend Sarah is getting hitched to her manz, Greg this September. The colors for her wedding are some of my favorite combos. When my manz saw these colors he joked that she was planning my wedding.

Go bright or go home, suckas!

We haven't decided what the final piece will look like, but I just wanted to share a look at some things that were in my head.

For her soft and airy....blush colors in organza and netting with bright orange dupioni accents. Or maybe switch it up and get all hot pink and red-hot! Yow!

Or maybe even a crisp, simple vintage-y bow cradling the head...

I'll be honest, the way I work custom pieces (email with client, sketch ideas, take photos, email customer some more, finalize, take more photos and hope everyone is happy....) doesn't work out in my favor in terms of growing a business. I spend so much more time on everything than I actually quote the client for and, lemme tell you, that is just not the way to sanity and growth, my dears. Clearly, I need to find a better way of handling things....streamlining things, valuing my time.

The reason I am telling you all that? It's not to make custom clients feel bad! Nope - It's all my doing. So.... I've been toying with the idea of coming up with a bridal line and having just a few styles/colors to pick from and that's it (well, maybe I'll customize colors for you :). Time to set some boundaries while still fulfilling needs of my fans! I'll do custom...but maybe only for dear, dear friends and for the baddest ass ideas on the block.

If there's one thing I keep learning....it's that you have to find the ways that work for you. Not someone else.

And that is as true in life as it is in business, my friends!

In my garden: Baby praying mantis on basil

This evening I went out to the porch to pick some cilantro for a dinner salad and these two little guys caught my eye on the basil next door. (Look closely, you'll see two baby praying mantis siblings on each basil plant.)

As a kid I captured a praying mantis and kept it as a "pet" so to speak and even went so far as to buy it crickets at the pet store for it to eat (and eat it did!). So to me these things are pretty cool (though I understand if you are squeamish about bugs....so I would suggest closing your browser if you don't like looking at close ups of insects).

I have to say as far as insects go - they are pretty bad ass.

The miniature fanatic in me always exclaims, 'So. TINY!' whenever I see a mini of it's full size counterpart. You know, in that annoying forced-through-the-teeth-in-an-it-almost-hurts way - or even the highest-pitch-you-can-manage way.

Just try it with me: SO. TINY! Felt good right?

Give me: sultry, over the shoulder!

Oh, hello! I didn't see you....

There was even another baby praying mantis found hiding under the leaf of a zinnia plant.

I hope they stay a while and eat all the bad bugs! SO. TINY!

An open letter to dudes in the Pretty Good Things Craft Fair Booth.

This letter is inspired by all the negative dudes I've heard acting as shopping consultant at craft fairs and recently (if you can believe it) some negative girl-friends overheard in the booth at PGT too.

I know! Scandalous. All these negative-nellys spouting off their opinions like they're some overly opinionated bridesmaid on an episode of "Say Yes to the Dress" just ruining the day.

Ladies, forward this to your man-dude or your bff lady-dudette...because your friend, no matter if you're "playing house", "BFFs" or bound by law...you friend should support YOU. Your style. Not their agenda. Not their style.

But really, ladies, ditch your friends/boys if they're a drag like that or at the very least, quit caring/asking them for their opinion. Seriously.

Alright, without further ado....

Dear dude (bff, etc...),

Has this happened to you? Your lady is totally smitten with a hat, fascinator or hair do-dad and you've been asked, "what do you think?".

You're tired, you don't share her enthusiasm about item in question and last but not leastly, you want to get the eff out of this mother effing shopping excursion. Well! Get ready because I know JUST the thing you can say/do:

Shut the fuck up about it.

Seriously.

Read her face. She's all smiles and is excited, right? You know what she needs?

First let me tell you that she's asked you your opinion about it because she is (and this will be on the test) she is: Feeling. Unsure.

And you are there (and this will be on the test) to help make her feel sure. It's simple, really.

It's not about your personal opinion. It's about understanding.

All she needs is ONE person. Just one person that she cares for to validate her decision that, yes, indeed, this is the best accessory ever and that she is on-point in feeling fabulous wearing it and yes, it most definitely it suits her style. Her style. Not yours. (Yeah, that's on the test too and worth 30% of your final grade). Repeat: "Her style. Not mine".

Now, I can't say exactly why she is feeling unsure about it...is she insecure?, is she weighing her bank account with her desire for something snazzy? Is she looking to simply engage you in an activity that makes the two of you stronger (the couple that plays together, stays together...etc.) Figuring it out.

So the next time you hear your bff, or lady love ask, "what do you think about _insert your fashionable item in question here_?" Ask yourself: Is it her style? Does she look happy?

Give it a try sometime - I'm not asking you to be a liar - I am asking you to encourage your woman to be herself. Say: "Yeah, that's totally you. I think you look great - - you're smiling, your glowing and that's the best part about it."

It's been a ~~while~~ looong time since I've posted an OMG Hat post. But when I saw Ambers the horse wearing a hat designed by Stephen Jones for the 300th Royal Ascot my immediate reaction was: OMG.

I know there's a lot of people who think dressing up animals in clothing is ridiculous, demeaning and all that. But not to dismiss all of you....but whatever. It's a horse in a mother effing hat. Who the hell knows. Maybe she feels like a million bucks.

It's hard being a grown-up.

Hey guys. I thought I'd give you an update on where my thoughts are. I think I'll start with this: I want to start feeling in like a grown-up. And let me be clear that when I say feel like a grown up I mean that I want to feel balanced, secure, calm, proud, wise .... I feel flickers of these emotions here and there, but I want more, more, more dammit!

And I am working on this. I am getting my footing. Goal setting. Organizing. Weight-loss-ing. Baby-stepping. Working on working on a schedule. Working on not blaming other things/situations/self for when I don't follow my schedule. Working on being aware....present. Learning on coping and choosing and being happy. Working on patience during this growth.

I hope this doesn't come across as too bleak or depressing or something. It's just that I am in a space now that feels like a slow climb, crawl, walk - whatever - towards being healthier, happier and all that...consistently.

I lost some of my spirit in the past months - I was in a stasis - I lost some of the stuff that I started off with when I graduated from grad school. I want it back. And Imma gonna take it back. And I am going to be bigger and badder than ever. But I know it's not overnight. And it's hard because it's about breaking habits and forming new ones.

But basically....I'm gonna start kicking ass and getting my shit together because I want to be that kind of woman, like, every day.

It's hard being a grown up. Am I right or am I right?

Renegade Austin 2011 Roundup: Leah Duncan

Oh Leah Duncan. What can I say about Leah Duncan's work except that she hits the mark on her color-story pictured above. I love it. I will divorce Nick and marry it . . . that's how much I love it.

I remember she was at the first Renegade Craft Fair - I was just as taken with her work then (and her pretty, pretty and inviting booth set up!) - and was looking forward to the fact that she was there again this year. I didn't actually meet her this time, but I'd be willing to bet she's a sweet lady. I mean, how could you not be when you create work like this?

But her illustrations/drawings are beautiful. Just look. They have a southwestern, mosaic-y, dreamy feeling. They just make me sigh.

Renegade Austin Recap 2011: Coatt

Rebecca Coagan is the designer and lovely lady behind Coatt. I met her when she popped her head around the sheer curtain during set up at the Austin Renegade Craft Fair. Coatt was the booth right behind Pretty Good Things.

I love the beautiful simplicity of her work. I was so...I guess delighted is the best term...when I learned about what she makes: delicate morse coded jewelry. The idea was new to me and her delivery is quite lovely.

I am telling you. Mark her shop down for the holidays or gift giving times, because these are THE perfect gift for a best friend, a girlfriend, or someone who has helped you out in a particularly hard time in your life, or is...your mom... or is just the coolest (how about that for a custom necklace: "the coolest" or "bad-ass" or "bff").

When Becki introduced herself she asked if she might hang the cardboard wall from the tent frame. No problem-o. Do it to it! Well, after our introduction I didn't think much more of it seeing as it was a mazillion degrees, was a wee bit stressed out and it was humid as hell during set up (the dock doors were open and it's TX, people.).

Later on Saturday day I see Becki approaching our booth. As a thank you for that small favor (teensy, really...) she gave us a necklace coded "Love" from her line! Call me surprised - using the frame was no skin of my back and her gesture was too kind.

But I think that's just her generous nature. During the entire year of 2011, she is donating 60% of every 'SOS' morse coded necklace to MSF USA's relief efforts in Japan!

The necklaces are simple and delicate and stand up to just "being" - being pretty on, being simple jewelry...but knowing the secret behind them adds that layer that makes handmade things like this so special. Thank you, Beki.

I must say I love my little necklace! (and then I realized it was the perfect gift for my mom...So I bought my mom a "Love" necklace as a thank you to her for taking care of my Simon kitty during our trip.)

Renegade Austin 2011 Roundup: Paper + Twine

This year the PGT booth was positioned across the aisle from Paper + Twine. Casey Baudoin designs paper goods that are clever and sweet at the same time. I mean, HELLO!, Santa Clause business cards? Tooth fairy kits? Cupid Kits? I am a sucker for that stuff. I really admired Casey's nicely branded booth set up. It was a relaxing respite amongst all the natural excitement from the people and booths at the fair!

Speaking of those tooth fairy kits...I am telling you... if you have a little person in your life getting ready to cross this milestone you have to snatch one up for their parents or you! Do a quick search for handmade tooth fairy kits on Etsy (or elsewhere for that matter), and you'll see....she's the only one doing it with: a) good design (a must people.), b) fairy dust and c) tooth fairy business cards (and more!). Really. This is great. You know you enjoyed finding a few quarters (or nowadays is it i-tunes gift cards or cold hard cash?) under your pillow even if you knew the truth after a while....I think it would still be a fun way to record the deal. You'd think she's paying me to give this big thumbs up for her products...but nope. I just love these kits. Strange since I was such a weenie when it came to pulling my own teeth, but that's a story for another time...

Renegade Craft Fair Austin 2011: Recap!

Well, another Renegade Craft Fair just flew by! I'd say it felt like just yesterday that we were in Texas, but I would be lying. It feels like forever-ago. Probably because I've been swimming in work (this is a good thing!) and I feel like I have those horse blinders on. Must. Look. Ahead. So, even though it's a good thing, I can't help feeling a little overwhelmed (I know you're thinking: hey, what's new, M. dog?) and sometimes helpless and sometimes incredibly hopeful. I am pretty sure, nay - I am totally sure, half of these feelings come from learning to navigate/manage my life as an adult and half of them are a direct result of choosing a life as an entrepreneur. Slowly I am learning how to get more of the hopeful days tallied on the calendar.

But this post is turning into a therapy discussion and I wanted it to leave a happy taste in your brain and eyeballs - more like candy! So let me share some photos from our trip down to the the 2nd Annual Renegade Craft Fair in Austin. (P.S. I have to be more disciplined and snap more photos outside the car and outside the fair next time! We ate at cool restaurants, hung out with Josh and Kristy's cool friends, had beers at cool bars...next time, eh?)

This Renegade Austin was better for me in one main area - I was more relaxed and confident about everything. Sure, there's always that stress/nervousness/insecurity about the whole deal...(will your booth look trashy vs cool, will you have enough product, will you sell more than last year, will anyone buy the pillbox hats, will you be able to cover all your costs of attending the fair, will you be less exhausted this time or more?). It was my third big fair but also big part of my relaxed feeling is due to my booth helper, Kristy (my friend/sister-in-law). She helped from beginning to end - both days! You know, working the fair is just like working a full time joby-job - except it is perfectly acceptable (at least in my booth) to have a beer at beer-o-clock. So giving up a weekend off of work to work is a very, very generous thing to do. She was my right hand lady last year and whether she knows it or not, helps take so much of weight off and also acts as a therapist/coach/merchandiser/assistant/sales associate/model. The life of a booth helper is not easy. But it is much appreciated!

In the coming posts, I'll be sharing some of the cool people/makers/vendors I met, because let me tell you, there were plenty awesome ones to go around and I want to help you get your holiday shop on early! (who is with me in buying only handmade or at least local for any and all future gifts you are giving? (more on that subject later as well) But for now, please indulge me in sharing some images of Pretty Good Things! (PS a shop update will be taking place...adding to it new stuff I made for the fair...my goal is by the end of June. I know it's a long ways away, but slowly I'll be chipping away at this list I have composed...please note there are a lot of sub bullets)

Here's a lovely customer who had just purchased a leopard print pillbox hat. I wish I wrote her name down (gah!) and also captured her whole outfit (another gah!)...because it was stylin'. Saddle shoes and all. But she was kind enough to let me snap a photo of her wearing her new hat!

Ok. so on day two this teensy dog visited my booth and she was the palest strawberry blond Pomeranian (thanks to the help of a Kool-aid dye job, according to her owner). This is my kind of dog. Now if only she was wearing a teensy bow.

And finally, one of my sweet, supportive husband (I am sneaking this one in... and here's hoping he will not divorce me for it :)

Leaving Texas and entering Oklahoma....On to Kansas and finally sweet ole Nebraska. Four states in 14 hours. Man. Texas is big. We returned home on a day the weather was particularly ripe with tornadoes and thunderstorms. We got a little freaked out in OK due to the tornado action reported, but thankfully we missed it!

Caitlin asked me to create a custom severed zombie hand fasincator for her zombie/apocalyptic wedding over the 2010 Halloween weekend in none other than, Vegas. .... see? there's Elvis marrying the zombie bride and survivor groom.

What I am up to in the PGT studio: making smart little hats for radical ladies.

I am currently in the process making a number of little mini, domed cocktail hats for the Pretty Good Things collection. (check out the first in the group Ms. Charlotte Bibi No. 1 at PrettyGoodThings.com - ps. get em while they're hot - limited edition of 4!) They are incredibly easy to wear, sassy and won't block the view of the person behind you in the movie theater when you wear one out on a date.

Are you saying to yourself: really...it's easy to wear?

Well yes, dah-ling, yes. It is!

The underside follows the natural curve of your head and only a few bobbi pins are needed to securely attach the chic hat to your lovely locks. I hand sew the base to the crown and leave channels for the bobbies to easily slide between - so they can grip your hair and hat simultaneously.

There's no wrong way to wear these domed mini cocktail hats, though I'd recommend tipping it just slightly off to the side and toward your forehead. Balance out a messy side bun by placing it opposite the bun or (if you don't have long locks anymore like me) position it over/near your part. (also check out this sassy lady sporting one....oh surprise! it's me again! Join the PGT Posse and I won't have to always use myself as a model.)

Each hat is made in the same loving process, although surface decorations add to the mix, of course. But generally I follow these steps:

cut two layers of buckram (doubled for sturdiness).
wet buckram and stretch over hand-carved (carved by moi) dome.
dry buckram frame.
trim buckram frame.
shape wire frame.
cut non-woven batting and hand-sew batting to buckram and wire frames.
shape hat.
lay out outer fabric, trim, stretch, pin and hand-sew to frame.
hand-block buckram base.
trim up base to fit hat frame.
iron and cut underside fabric.
glue to concave base.
sew tag to base.
stitch hat base to hat frame
add bobbi pins.
Lastly, sprinkle pretty good things magic on top give each hat a great big hug and kiss and send if off to its new, loving owner!

Phew! All of these steps result in a high quality handmade cocktail hat you'll be proud to wear. Plus there's bragging rights to eco-friendly construction through refashioning/up-cycling, limited editions (meaning you won't be a fashion clone), and supporting small businesses/designers! That's a quadruple whammy right there.

I am asked quite frequently how long it takes me to make the products I sell. These babies have a number of steps and each domed mini cocktail hat hat takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes to make on a good day (not accounting for any additional surface decoration - - such as beads, sequins, feathers, flowers, ruffles, etc.)

Lincoln to Denison

Lincoln Nebraska to Denison Iowa ... admittedly it's not what I would classify as a breathtaking drive. No. But. What it lacks in grandeur, it makes up for in tid-bits of oddities, simple beauty and certainly its share of memories. I've made the trip to Denison Iowa many-a-time over my 30 years. My aunt and grandma currently live there and my mom and I visited over this Easter weekend.

Here's what I saw:

A budding willow tree and a dusty road in Missouri Valley, IA. Field art somewhere between Dunlap and Dow City, IA. The Ho Hum Motel in Denison, IA. A Red orange, rusting metal container. New growth. My grandma's basement of stuff. Oh my, all the stuff. Grain bins Dunlap IA. A train with graffiti on every. single. car.

Last Saturday I was a guest vendor at the Omaha Craft Mafia's Spring Sale hosted by CAMP (one of CAMP's founders is Princess Lasertron, btw.) - Thank you OCM, CAMP and those who stopped by to say hi and did a little shopping too!

I had never been to CAMP prior to the event and I have to admit, it would be a perfect space to work in! It's bright and spacious and has nice vibes, if I can be so new-agey on ya.

Hold on to your butts my friends. These sweet-ass bird earrings will soon be part of the Pretty Good Things line up. Except not exactly.

Let me explain.

You will notice, with the latest flock I painted up all snazzy-like, each shiny bird has different coloring. A hand-painted minty green beak, or a marigold yellow body or lavender wings... These particular birds are available in person at craft fairs.

But gosh darn it. I had a focus problem. I wanted to make all sorts of color combos. This resulted in too many one of a kinds. Too much waiting for each to dry. Too many layers of paint. TOO MUCH TIME.

Business-wise it wasn't working out.

Oh sure, it's fine if they would sell for $100 a pair. But something tells me that they aren't destined for that price point. Well, gosh, maybe they would if my name was Marc Jacobs and/or also farmed it out to cheap overseas labor or some ca-ca like that. (oh and if you're willing to spend $100 on these babies....CALL ME!)

And spending so long painting each sickeningly cute bird isn't a way to make it as a proper indie business (yeah, I am looking at you...ah-hem: any seller who undersells their craft/time)

And so I am chucking my paintbrush in lieu of the spray can (theorizing that this will be faster, though I have been known to be terribly, terribly wrong in past theorizing). Will keep you posted on the progress of the newest, affordable flock.

I am going to say something here that is probably the most shocking thing you will hear today: I am not perfect.

Pick your jaw up off the floor. You don't believe me. You're all, 'I see her glowing skin and perfect aura. She is the perfect specimen of feminine beauty.' and now I've ruined it all for you. Now you're all, 'You mean, that's all FAKE? OMG.'

Here's proof: (check out the monster zit on the chin in the first photo - zits wait for no photographer, man. Trust me. I know this to be true.)

Photo editing is a part of the job at Pretty Good Things (as I am the only worker bee here) As of yet, I don't have enough wherewithal (be it capital or motivation) to find and hire/trade a proper photographer and model (though my two friends Andy and Lynn have been quite lovely models in the past - thank you!).

So I struggle with the following:
bush-league lighting
I was born too early and missed the day where you're biologically assigned photogenic powers and therefore end up with, like 88 photos before I get one the will do (you think I am joking here, I'm not).
I am 30 years old and still get zits (these will not sell hats, me thinks)
I have under eye circles (cursed eye circles!)
wayward hair situations unbeknownst to yours truly in an otherwise usable photo.
...and much more that I won't list.

But then all is made right in the world. Because I have a special magical power called: PHOTOSHOP-hop-hop-hop....(and it wouldn't be right to leave out my new digital SLR: Canon Rebel XS in the shout out as well)!

So there you have it. When I photograph myself (or models) and the products themselves, I call in the mighty and all-powerful Photoshop to fix all the "problems" (and give my eyes a little more sparkle).

Ta da!

So. all this blah-blah-blahing isn't for nothing....I want to edit one of your photos for free (up to 5 people)!!!

The reason I am offering to edit 5 individuals' photos (one photo per person, please) Is I'd like to practice editing various levels of photography. Plus I want to see how long it takes me. Plus I am nice. Plus, in all honesty, if it goes well and I enjoy working on others stuff, perhaps I can parlay it into some type of extra income.

I know not everyone can afford Photoshop - or wants to learn it all - or has time - or knows what the history brush does (wait....I don't know what the history brush does) whatever.... And honestly, I'd still count myself in that "can't afford it" category but I managed to get huge discount when I was a student, so lucky me yadda yadda yadda. Anyway, enough justifying.

It's Christmas time B*#$&@$!

It's no secret. I really, really, really love Christmas.

I like prepping for the holiday. Decorating outside and decorating the tree. I like family time. I like ignoring the "how to avoid gaining weight (because that would be the absolute WORST thing to happen to you...) during the Christmas season" "news" reports. I like eating all the festive foods I can get my hands on because winter is coming and I have to bulk up if I am to be warm!!! I love winter beers, mulled wine and NOG! oh the nog! I like getting that warm happy feeling from the holiday - or is that just the booze?...well anyway.

And at the risk of being unpopular here....I love prancing around to (select) Christmas tunes and I welcome the snow. Bring. It. On. Nothing is more of a bah humbug to me than people who both hate Christmas music and beotch about the snow*. Well, maybe, that time my sister broke it to me that Santa wasn't real ON CHRISTMAS EVE** was kind of a bah humbug...but whatever.

Basically - long story short - I am saying Christmas times make me feel good. When I feel good I like to give stuff away.

So. I was going to be all promisey and stuff and tell you guys that every single day this month I am going to post a giveaway, or a freebie you can download to make Christmas fun. But then I was all, let's get real. Mary, you've had too much coffee and Christmas cheer.

It's about time, Mary OR a quick Recap: Renegade Craft Fair Chicago

Holy smokes! Its been one month since Renegade Chicago! What? What the H. E. Double Hockey sticks have I been up to? Well, apparently NOT blogging about it...that's what.

But not because it wasn't awesome or wonderful or a super duper fun time. Anything but.

So let me finally share some images and a quick little recap of what we did during that working vacation...

Day 1 (Thursday):
We drove to Chicago. It's about an 8 hour trip. We rented a sweet 2010 van that hauled me, Nick, all the PGT stuff, PLUS two of our friends (Alisa and Jake). It made me sad to return to the '97 Dodge Neon that drives like a bucket of bolts on wheels.

ANYWAY.

We settled in to the Wicker Park Inn (awesome place, btw), met our friend Shawn and ate dinner.

Day 2 (Friday):
Nick and I were on our own for a few hours. Left to our own devices we decided a big relaxing lunch was in order. A big relaxing lunch with two strong beers. Two strong beers each. Needless to say (close your eyes, young'ens), we were .... a little relaxed after lunch. It was great!

Later we trained it downtown to met our friends to gaze at the bean sculpture and the lake and Oprah's apartment building.

For the record, here is my picture of reflections in the bean sculpture. As far as public sculptures go, I personally think this one is pretty good. Come on!...you can walk under it (plus) and it makes everyone smile (anyone who doesn't like smiling is a turd).

Day 3 (Saturday):
The day of the fair arrived and it was a bit drizzly. No pictures for that - I was a wee bit stressed trying to navigate a rainy set up in the 2 hours they give before you have to be set up. Cars were squeezing down the road trying to get in (a couple actually scraped a parked car and one excessive Hummer slowly, and miraculously made its way down the road too - It literally had about 2 inches on either side before it would scrape a car or knock a tent down. Sorry dude. But your car is an asshole.) Yeah. So no pictures.

The rain cleared up and everyone was excited and happy.

The long 13 hour days are worth it all. Meeting new people customers and other sellers. Showing them how to wear the pieces. Hearing all the fun people have in your booth. It rubs off on everyone. It might sound weird, but thinking about the 13 hour days makes me feel good I don't "work for the man".

Day 4 (Sunday):
It was perfect. The day was bright, sunny and exciting!

(It's hard to see, but I am doing my signature move for the trip: peace sign. Doing my part to bring it back.)

Meet my wonderful booth helpers this fair, Logan and Nick:

Logan is an old friend from middle school (omg, I know!) who now lives in Chicago. It was so great to have her there. Helpers at fairs are M.U.S.T. Plus we're, like, totally, like famous now, or something because we were photographed by a guy who takes photos for this website. He said, 'look candid'. And from the photo it appears we are candidly discuss this chair. High five! Thanks Logan!

Nick is pictured here looking rather grump-a-lumpa-gussy. But really he's a funny guy who would gladly fetch me foods and the occasional libation as the day wore on. Plus it was super duper great to have him there too! Husband support is a M.U.S.T. at the fair too! Thanks Nick!

Look how long the fair was...and there were just as many booths on the other side of the street and looking the other direction!

Watch out for Zombies!

One of the reasons I love creating hats, fascinators and hair do dads is that I have an opportunity to create something sculptural. I love me some good drawing, sculpting, planning, engineering and sewing. It gets me all light-in-the-head excited.

So I jumped on the chance to work with the extremely lovely Caitlin who requested an awesome SEVERED ZOMBIE HAND!!! fascinator for her apocalyptic zombie bride / groom survivor themed wedding!!! - in where else, but VEGAS!!!

I'm sorry for the excessive use of exclamation points, but this sounds like one majorly awesome wedding.

I was tha-rilled to be asked to create this unique piece. Thank you, Caitlin for the awesome idea I could help bring to life, well...almost.

There's a hand in there somewhere...

Total time carving it out around 1 hour? I am really bad about keeping track of time when I get into projects.

Making friends with the zombie hand because at this point I realized that covering it with fabric was going to take longer than anticipated. It is imperative to make friends with your craft so you don't piss it off. (if you're a maker of anything - you know what I am talking about)

I regret that I don't have any pictures of making the green skin. Originally, I thought making a flat pattern of this hand would be the way to go (boy was I diluted) but I ended up having to drape and sew the fabric to the foam bit by bit. Total time sketching, carving, sewing...8-10 hours? (again, I need a stopwatch)

The knuckles are pin tucked to give it some wrinkly dimension. The nails are pieces of black vinyl. Gold metallic birdcage veiling, red silk "blood" at the wrist and metallic fabric base complete the look:

The goal was for a glamorous but creepy feel...Did it hit the mark?

When a lady turns 30 there's only one way to celebrate and that, my friends, is in sequins.

Remember this post a while back? Well, let me tell you....fate was shining on me this weekend when thinking about what I was going to buy myself for the big 30. I checked DrJays.com and not only was the jacket marked down AGAIN from the sale price it was an additional 20% off that sale-sale price. Man. It was fate. And the universe and shit.

I have a feeling most business advisers wouldn't, um, advise...that I offer such a crazy sale.

Sure, I don't want customers to think PGT items are cheap or will always be priced as such (mama's gotta eat, my friends)....it's just that...

...well, I am feeling a pinch crazy - and I think my excess merch what's causing it. I've spent hours on making these things - but honestly, it's just... It's just...ahhh! It's just....I just want to get it out of my sight. There I said it.

The pieces belong to a good home - one that is going to love them, treasure them - to a woman who is going to wear them with moxie and pride.

AND I figure that everyone likes nice round numbers like $2, $5, $10 and $15...and steals like 75%-90% off!!

What the car rental place doesn't want you to know!

I don't always trust my 14 year old jalopy to function well on the interstates - which is why renting comes in handy for travel, right? Well, I just wanted to share this bit of information before you agree to pay rental insurance through the rental place: Give your both your auto insurance company (if you have auto ins.) and your credit card you'll rent with a call first!

Here's why: My auto ins. will cover a loss to the auto up to "loss of use" which basically means I'd be responsible for renting the car during it's repair because the company couldn't rent it out. I don't want to risk paying for that (there's a reason -ahem, money- why I still drive a car that practically pre-dates blogs! - gasp!) so I gave my credit card company a call to check on any slack that they might pick up. In comes "Auto rental collision damage repair" which they say "reimburses you for the deductible portion of your personal automobile insurance, valid administrative and loss-of-use charges imposed by the rental car company"

More likely than not, I won't have to use any of this protection - but it helps knowing I am better covered....now if only I could say the same for my health insurance policy.

Now, I am NOT an expert in this area and I can't claim to know what's best for your situation...but this is just a be sure to check out your options suggestion. Don't pay for services already covered and make sure you understand/follow each company's terms (ins., credit card, rental place). For example, the credit card company won't hold their end of the deal if I fail to decline the collision damage waiver presented by the rental place.

Alright, so I don't know if the rental place doesn't want you to know this - but it seems logical to me! They stand to profit....

A foray into hairdressing

Remember when I was all like, "I want to dye my hair pink!" - - around March? You don't? Oh.

Well in any case, that feeling came back to me just recently and what do you know, I just decided to dye the damn hair already and get it over with. I was finally ready! Take a gander at my new dye job!

It's no A+, but Cs get degrees, baby! Am I right or am I right, folks? Not bad for my first bleaching attempt and candy-color dye job!

I used Beyond the Zone Bleaching kit and Beyond the Zone Color Jamz Party Time Pink dye

I bleached it to a golden yellow and then left the pink color in for about 20 min. I was pretty afraid of getting a chemical burn so I stayed away from my roots...which looks kind of lame, but I'll take it over a burn and it's going to end up that way later anyway. In the end the color came out fairly cotton candy colored - which I was hoping for. The dye itself was kind of goopy and it got me wondering if all candy color hair dyes are this way. Sometime I want to try a lilac color - maybe I'll go the Manic Panic route next time. Having a helper would have, well, helped....but I managed.

Before I went about dying my mane I decided to turn to the pros: Michelle from Wicked Whimsy and Kaylah from The Dainty Squid. To both of you lovely ladies, I say this: thank you for the much appreciated advice and knowledge!! You made it less scary for me. (Yes, bleaching was a little intimidating...I almost felt a little like I was betraying my own hair and I thought something dramatic would happen - like it falling off. Weird, yes. But I got over it.)

It's weird. I had high hopes for the hat on the left involving a floppy flower I made a few months ago out of a beautiful yellow, peach, white and gray floral print...but the hat was resisting and it transformed into something that worked better? The question mark is because I am not so sure that I am so crazy about it. It's definably more "old school" and has a vintage feel to it. But between you and me...I like the teal one on the right the best. It's hard not to compare as I make these even though this "make two a day" thing isn't a competition at all. Merely a plan to get S done!

These are a couple of photos of a fashion illustration I am working on for a group show here in Sept. I am planning three drawings all with undersea headwear inspired themes. This is Ariel. The finished piece is colored with watercolor....but these photos turned out neat-o so I just wanted to share them with y'alls.

I am planning to make the actual hat in time for a March show. I loves me some underwater stuff...KWIM PPL?

Just so, you know, I'm, like, accountable and all ... here are hats 3 and 4. I don't have another full day to work until Friday so you'll have to hold on to your butts until then!

The hat on the left isn't upcycled in anyway :( but it still deserves a :) right?

The magenta fabric in the hat on the right is made from some very awfully patterned pants with far too much elastic doing the fitting and not enough tailoring. But on the up side of things the legs of the pants were converted into wonderful looking sand bags for the craft fair booth and the remaining "cut-offs" were thrown into the scrap pile - just waiting for reassignment! This fabric is way more happy being a hat than sad pants.

Isn't she perennially charming and lovely? And isn't the fact that she is in all these stylin' hats make her look extra charming and lovely?

Aaaand.....did you know she is actually interesting to follow on twitter? As in she actually uses it herself. As in she actually says funny things. As in she seems like a nice, interesting person. Some celebs I've tried following aren't all that great, kwim? ... or am I the only crazy that follows celebs on twitter?...please don't leave me hanging on that one! Wow. I just used the word celebs three times in this paragraph. This must end.

The last minute & what I am doing about it.

My dad has said once or possibly a few times, "If it weren't for the last minute nothing would get done". I've been working at a steady pace for Renegade, albeit a little closer to a "not motivated" pace (I refuse to call it lazy) than "overly ambitious" pace. And although it's not really thelastminute quite yet (I have about three weeks of work time before I leave for Renegade Craft Fair Chicago) I still have a lot of stuff to do. Some if it is prep/organizational stuff while some of it falls under the "you'd better get your A in gear so you your booth doesn't look like S. {aka: make hats} category.

To combat my fear of showing up to RCF Chicago with not enough stuff I am kicking it into high gear. I am going to make 2 one-of-a-kind hats for all the full days of work ahead of me plus making other little items like clippies and fascinator style stuff. That means I'll have 15 new hats. All one of a kind. Each hat I am planning takes me about 3 hours to make (probably more because I am not a robot (yet) and mess up sometimes). I am crossing my fingers that a few of these hats (and the ones still in my head) will find good homes in the old windy city. With more than 25 unique snazzy cocktail hats to peruse I am sure someone can find what they are looking for.

I finished these two hats today (actually I finished one and one needs an underbelly...but whatever) They are both made from up-cycled/refashioned/re-purposed (whatever you want to call it) clothing. Both were once lovely blouses and now, of course, lovely hats (and if you say otherwise you can just say otherwise to anyone but me).

You know, I'll probably end up with way too much stuff like I did in Austin. But I guess it's better to be safe than have a booth that is empty.

I don't know about you, but I am a proud card-carrying member of the club "clips and stuff have problems staying put in my hair". My hair is too, what some might say, "lifeless" but I like say "silky smooth" because it's more favorable and positive and we shouldn't be down on ourselves. But I am what you might call a problem-solver and wouldn't you know it, I figured out a way for clip styled fascinators and combs to stick in my hair! I'd like to say it was life changing, but let's not be dramatic.

Also, I didn't mention this in my video but the option to use hair spray and tease your hair a bit also helps and might work well for you. PLUS I think this method is good to use no matter your hair type.

So if you have 3.5 minutes to spare give the video a play!

Last week I made my very first mint julep. It wasn't anything to write home about. I liked it well enough, but still felt the recipe I used left it too boozy and too sugary and had to add water to dilute it. The recipe I used that first time was this: 2 fresh mint sprigs, 1 tbsp. sugar syrup, crushed ice and 3 measures bourbon whiskey. While this recipe may float some boats, I felt the syrup must go, the mint needed more mashing and there should more measures of water. Hey - that's like a whole other recipe!

Despite less than favorable opinions, I knew there was potential in this drink for me to enjoy it. Drinks are after all, a personal thing and you just have to find the right mix for yourself....which brings me to my second attempt:

Mint Julep: Mary Style! For this you will need:
1 Old Fashion glass (chilled)
1 spoon
1 shallow dish
2-3 ice cubes
4-5 mint leaves
1 tablespoon of granulated sugar (more or less depending on personal taste - you'll have to figure that one out for yourself)
1.5 oz. bourbon
1.5 oz. water

First, gather provisions while your Old fashioned glasses are chilling (I did not chill the glass but think it would have added to the drink's allure - but when you have to make a mint julep, youhavetomakeit - chilled glasses or not!)

Next, pour the sugar into the shallow dish and add the mint leaves to the dish. Take the back of your spoon and mash it all up. The sugar crystals tear up the leaves and get all the oils out at the same time. I think this is a great method if you don't own a mortar and pestle but then again, I am no accomplished chef. You'll end up with some raggedy looking mint leaves but the result is delicious!

Now, some of you may be thinking, Mary you're going to get mint leaves in your teeth that is going to be both embarrassing and unpleasant to drink. Don't worry. The leaves eventually settle to the bottom of the glass and if your goal isn't to get stupid-drunk by slamming them down or constantly stirring it, you won't get them in your teeth. (Dahling, this drink is for sipping.)

Then add the water and thoroughly stir the sugar/mint mash until the sugar is dissolved. Next add two ice cubes and stir again. Finally it's time for the bourbon! Pour that in and give it one last stir. You may want to give it a little sip and see if you prefer to add anything more...bourbon, sugar, water, ice cubes.

Garnish with fresh mint and you're ready to enjoy!

I was reading Craft: yesterday and they posted a link to Givers Log. I had to share it with you guys! This awesome mom made her son a Mario themed b-day party complete with Boo balloons, mushroom cupcakes, a block pinata (filled with coins!!!)....and (perhaps the BEST part) little Mario hats!!!

We all have reasons not to go wearing something we really love.

Some of these reasons are practical while some remain steadfast caca. de. vaca.

Case in point:

"I'm too old to wear it"
"It makes my (insert body part) look (insert self deprecating comment)"
"I'll stand out"
"I never go anywhere that fancy"
"I could never pull it off"

Sometimes you don't wear the things you love because once, in 4th grade a little jerky popular boy with a head shaped like an alien made fun of you at lunch time for wearing a super awesome glitterized Little Mermaid T-shirt and you never wore it again. Ahem, er, um, I mean, sometimes you don't wear the things you love ever again because you're worried about what people will think about you.

But you know what? You've just got to say F that! F it all the way to the moon!

Whatever happened to GUTS! MOXIE! CHARISMA!....to being super just the way you want to be?

Whatever happened to the best reason of all to wear something: No. Good. Reason.?

It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere Parrot Head Fascinator

It's no secret that I enjoy a bit of good-looking camp here and there (see the Oh Deer Headband, if you will). So it should come as no surprise that I decided to make my step-mom a fancy, glitterized parrot head inspired fascinator for her next Jimmy Buffett concert.

Here it is nearing completion.

I had a lot of fun with this particular fascinator because parrot heads, as a group, seem like they can't get enough of the OTT (over the top) hats. Just google it! Here, I'll save you the trouble and google parrot head hats for you.

I wanted this little guy to be a bit more demure (who doesn't like miniature?) yet still have some fun with kitsch, loads of glitter (who doesn't like a little glitz?) and generally, just keep it toned-down in size. The size thing is an issue of both comfort (foam, acrylic, or polyester based headgear just doesn't breathe, I don't care what you say) and consideration (no one wants that dude in front of them at a concert...everyone likes to see what is in front of them...right?) This fascinator is comfortable AND nice! how about that?

I first became fascinated with Elvis in the 6th grade. It started as a silly joke. But the more I actually listened to his music...the more I loved Elvis. Love. Yes, I love Him. And at the risk of sounding like a big block of stinky CHEESE....His music always puts me in a good mood. No. Matter. What.

Perhaps in a different decade I would have been one of those screaming fans.

Ohmygosh, people. Today was just stupid. I'll tell you why in this short little va-va-LOG!

A short little note on the makeup: turns out since it's so lo-fi that you can't really even see makeup vs. no makeup! Hurray! The hair, is another story.
